The Blackshear Fire Department (BFD) is hosting a fundraising dinner to support fellow firefighter Johnnie Anderson.
Anderson, a local firefighter/paramedic and Captain of Fire Station 1, is currently battling carotid artery cancer. He has dedicated 49 years to serving the Blackshear community as a first responder. Co-workers report that Anderson has expressed a desire to hold on until 2026 to complete a full 50 years of service.
The fundraising dinner is scheduled for June 20. Dinners will include one meat (choice of ribs, quarter chicken or pulled pork) two sides and a dessert for $15. A 1/2 chicken is $10, ribs are $35 and a Boston butt is $40. Funds raised will go towards Anderson’s medical expenses that are not covered by insurance.
“Johnny has given his life in service to the citizens of Blackshear,” said BFD Fire Chief BUcky Goble. “And I’d like to see the citizens of Blackshear help him back out.”
Anderson is still working as he is able and recently completed his first round of chemotherapy. Goble says everyone is hoping Anderson will be back at it by next week before he gears up for round two of chemo.
Dinners, Boston Butts and ribs can be ordered at the Blackshear Fire Department, Blackshear Police Department, Blackshear City Hall or Chris or Donna with Going Butts BBQ/Flamin' Smokers at (386) 478-9994 or (386) 847-2047.
The last day to place an order is Friday, June 13. Pick up will be at the Blackshear Fire Department Friday, June 20.
