Pierce County will have two National Day of Prayer observances tomorrow, Thursday, May 1. The first observance will be at noon at Offerman City Park and an evening observance will be held at 6 p.m. at a new location — the Pierce County Court House. The Rev. James Lightsey, pastor of Offerman Baptist Church, is the coordinator for the Offerman event. Last day of school for the school system will be Tuesday, May 20. “Our seniors will have already completed their requirements for graduation prior to May 20. We wanted to keep graduation on Friday night, so our seniors will graduate before the last day of school,” explained School Superintendent Dara Bennett. Speakers include the Rev. James Lightsey, The Rev. Greg Carter and the Rev. Clinton Kearney. The Rev. Lightsey encourages all residents to attend the observance. The evening observance will be held at the courthouse. In the event of inclement weather, the Day of Prayer will be moved to the Bridge Community Church on Main Street. The theme for this year’s observance is “Pour Out to the God of Hope and Be Filled,” based on Romans 15:13. The day is a national observance where Americans are encouraged to turn to God in prayer and meditation. This year’s observance marks the 74th National Day of Prayer which was first commemorated in 1952.
