The Pierce County Hall of Fame (PC HoF) committee is currently working on a list of candidates for the Class of 2024 inductees.
This year’s class will be the seventh to be honored for achievements in athletics and community support.
The PC HoF committee is reaching out asking members of the Pierce County community to submit candidates for consideration. A ballot is located inside this edition of The Blackshear Times and will run weekly through the end of September.
“Since this is about honoring accomplishments in Pierce County,” said sports historian Rick Head, “I brought this before the committee of having more community involvement to provide names for us to look at. We’ve established a solid foundation through our first six classes.”
“We are also asking Hall of Fame members to contribute as well. Many of those inducted were coaches and have former players who may well deserve recognition.”
The Pierce County Hall of Fame’s first class was 2017 with the induction of Wallace Childs, Mary Rogers Brantley Mattson, Andy Pittman, W.D. Strickland, Laurine Williams Taylor, the 1966 Patterson High School girls’ state champion basketball team and several Lee Street state championship teams.
The Class of 2018 inductees were Lindy Blount, Genevieve Strickland Pope, R.L. Ransom, H.M. Thompson and Fitzgerald Williams.
Recognized in 2019 were “Cotton” Sapp, Thomas Miller, Bill Walker, Wes Bennett, Tiffany Collins, William Wall, David Wall and the 1979 Blackshear High School state golf champions.
There was no induction ceremony held in 2020 because of COVID.
Honored in 2021 were Andy Henderson, Maureen Brown, Lance Funderburk, Lauren Whitaker, Earlene Jacobs, Willie Jean Moody, Casey King and Wayne Sasser.
The Class of 2022 inductees were the 1988 PCHS boys’ state championship golf team, the 2000 PCHS girls’ state winning golf team, Mattie Daniels, Pat Davis, Steve Moody, Leroy Dukes and Rick Head.
The 2023 inductees included Leo Marshall, Lucius Yeomans, Darrell Hunter, Bob O’Steen, Tommy Pritchard, Eulin Gibbs, the 1989 PCHS boys’ state champion golf team, Bascom Raulerson, Ben Bennett, Charles Raulerson, Wade Britt and Rob Allen.
